Relocation of the memorial and NS documentation center

Design sketch of the future memorial (architekten waldorfplan + büro schweitzer)

With the decisions of the municipal committees, a long-standing central concern for the memorial and Nazi documentation center will become a reality in the coming years: the move to a historical location. The new premises will be set up in Bonn-En Endenich on the site of the ghetto camp that existed there during the Nazi era. This was created when the Gestapo confiscated the Benedictine convent "Zur ewigen Anbetung" in 1941 and Jewish families from Bonn and the Voreifel region were forcibly quartered there.

The internees lived in the ghetto camp for up to a year under catastrophic conditions and a self-administration imposed and controlled by the National Socialists. Young people and adults had to perform forced labor in factories in the surrounding area. Of the 497 people interned here, only 13 survived; the others were deported to various concentration and extermination camps and murdered.

Over the next few years, a modern spatial program adapted to the diverse tasks of a memorial site will be created in Endenich. A new permanent exhibition will present the history of the site and integrate it into Bonn's Nazi history. The memorial and Nazi documentation center will thus be given permanent, appropriate and sustainable premises.
