The Klabers

The story of a Jewish family from the Rhineland

Anna and Moritz with Margot, 1922

My whole life as a child in Germany was one of fear.

Margot Epstein

The exhibition focuses on the story of Margot Epstein and her family. Her mother Anna was born Klaber. Margot, born and raised in Bonn, was able to save photos and family documents when she fled to Great Britain in 1939 and the USA in 1940. She kept these in a suitcase for the rest of her life, which she never opened again - the memories of her childhood with her family were too painful.

The estate was made available to the Bonn Memorial in 2012. The exhibition uses these photos and personal documents to tell the story of the Klaber family in Bonn, the Rhineland and the Voreifel region. A large part of the family was deported and murdered during the Nazi era. Only a few, like Margot, managed to escape.

Margot was born in Bonn in 1921. Her father Moritz Holländer dies of typhoid fever in 1923. Her mother Anna, née Klaber, is a milliner and meets the textile representative Paul Getreider through her work. They married in 1926 and Margot's brother Heinz was born a year later.

The exhibition - which was created with the kind support of the North Rhine-Westphalia State Center for Political Education - consists of 24 roll-ups and can be borrowed free of charge if insurance cover is guaranteed.
